Conventional lithium batteries have the problem that at temperatures below freezing, they can no longer be charged. The smart, energy-efficient heating in the battery ensures that the cell temperature is high enough even in winter. When the cell temperature drops below -5 degrees, the integrated heating mat is activated when the battery needs to be recharged.
